how to join a retreat
One unique aspect of Pneuma is that you don’t simply “register for the event” or “make a reservation” as if it were a mega-conference or a motel. Pneuma is not a large organization with fine-tuned systems. It is a small, deeply relational ministry built upon organic friendships and trust. This has made the retreat sign-up process feel confusing for some attendees, so, in the spirit of clarity, here are the straightforward steps to attend!
- For New Pneuma Attendees -1. Read about Pneuma, the spiritual principles, what to expect, and FAQs. Watch for new Retreat announcements via email newsletter (sign up below) and on Instagram. Reach out and say hello to John during this time too!2. Apply for Pneuma Retreat whenever it suits your schedule. If you missed the Retreat announcement then you can visit the Instagram page or view the upcoming Retreats below.3. John will get in touch with you. This step is vital because of the deeply personal nature of Pneuma. Attending a spiritual retreat with strangers is a vulnerable experience for everyone involved, so John wants to make friends with everyone attending beforehand. If you have any hesitation about attending whether cost, relational fit, this is a great time to ask those questions.4. Hopefully after that conversation you're ready to commit to the upcoming retreat! From this point forward you'll be in touch with John directly for specific instructions about the two remaining steps: making your retreat payments and booking your travel!- For Alumni & Supporters -1. Stay in touch with the John & the Pneuma Community after your retreat. Subscribe to the Pneuma Newsletter. Consider supporting!2. Apply for Pneuma Retreat whenever it suits your schedule. Yes, even alumni & supporters go through the application process:)3. John will be in touch! All you need to do is book your travel and make your retreat payment if necessary! Special alumni & supporter payment notes: Alumni automatically receive a $250 discount. Financial supporters are permitted to attend one Pneuma Retreat each year at no cost, but still must apply for the retreat before attending.- Final Steps for all Attendees -The final steps to secure your spot at any retreat is to submit your non-refundable $250 retainer (with noted exceptions) and provide your travel arrangement receipt. BOTH pieces are required to secure your spot. All remaining balances are due four weeks before your Pneuma Retreat.- Notes for Travel Arrangements -
I do have specific requirements, so please watch this video for advice. You will be responsible for booking your own travel to Portland. All flights should be at PDX. We will make the most of our time together, so I require flights that arrive before 2pm on the first day and depart after 2pm on the last day. John will pick you up from the airport along with other attendees. The details will be arranged closer to the trip. If you end up waiting at the airport, PDX has a few good sitting areas inside the gate areas, so don't rush out of security. If you are not flying, let John know, and we’ll arrange a pick-up and drop-off for you.
